Time trials are raced over a set course and ridden individually starting at timed intervals. Whoever is fastest wins. The UK historically has a unique time trialling scene. It is governed by Cycling Time Trials, and for masters riders, the Veterans Time Trial Association. Set distance events the most common of which are 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles are judged on time with 12 and 24 hour events judged on distance.
Most traditional UK cycling clubs organise weekly evening 10 or 25 mile time trial events these are also usually open to non-club members and novices and are an excellent place to start. Just turn up, sign on and ride.

These rides have gained huge popularity in recent years. Based on European mass participation endurance events like the Etape du Tour and La Marmotte, they have been partly responsible for a huge uptake of cycling in the UK. Local UK sportives are a great start. Our tried and tested individual training programmes give our riders huge confidence. Build your fitness and skills and target those Alpine events that emulate the achievements of Tour de France legends. Road Racing is the simplest form of cycle sport - a bunch race where the first person across the finish line wins.
In the UK the governing body British Cycling oversee many affiliated leagues and clubs who organise open events. You'll need a racing licence from British Cycling and will find races on public roads as well as closed circuits. Riders are categorised by ability and gain points on their results starting 4th category and rising to Elite.
Older riders are often members of British Masters Cycle Racing who organise many excellent events up and down the country, their races are age categorised.
